Results of a study suggest that children diagnosed with sinus infections maybe at increased risk of developing toxic shock syndrome.

Toxic shock syndrome is usually associated with tampon use, and up until now has been overlooked in children because of its rarity. Toxic shock syndrome occurs when bacteria infects a body part and enters into the blood stream. If it is not treated right away it can be fatal.

According to a doctors at the University of Colorado, children with sinus infections are indeed at risk of developing the potentially fatal condition. In the study, the researchers analyzed data from more than 75 children diagnosed with toxic shock syndrome. They noted that 23 of the children at time of their diagnosis, also had a form of rhinosinusitis, known as a type of sinus infection.

Symptoms of toxic shock syndrome include; fever, rash, diarrhea, muscle pain and organ failure.
