Most women don’t need smears after hysterectomy

A survey shows that continued cervical smears are probably not needed after a woman has a hysterectomy
Most women have a cervical smear as part of a regular health check. But it is routinely done in women who don’t have a cervix, having had it removed in a total hysterectomy. The reason is to check for vaginal cancer.

Researchers at the University of Michigan have carried out a new analysis that reveals the effect of dropping smears. For women who have had a hysterectomy for reasons other than cancer, there really is no point on carrying on with the smears. But for those who have had cervical cancer or who have human papillomavirus infection, smears are still important, the researchers say.
