Tea and Garlic May Prevent Ulcers

By Abigail Mellier, June 14th, 2013 | Health | 0 Comments

Consuming tea and garlic may prevent a harmful bacteria from causing ulcers and stomach cancer, researchers say.

Scientists from the Show University School of Medicine in Tokyo and from the University Hospital Masstricht in the Netherlands say substances called catechins effectively kill the bacteria helicobacter pylori. Researcher Yoshimasa Yamamoto says both green tea and English-style brown teas have this potent effect.

Catechins also can destroy other bacteria such as E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, researchers say.
And researcher Ellen Stobberingh says fresh garlic produces the best effects in killing H. pylori. Cooking the garlic reduces the allicin concentration, making it less potent, Stobberingh says. She also suggests that treating H. pylori patients with fresh garlic may reduce the amount of antibiotic treatment they need.
