    Thousands of Tamils take part in Queen’s Park vigil

    Over 10,000 Tamils held a candlelight vigil at Queen’s Park on Friday for victims in their ravaged homeland.

    Organizers played Tamil music while speakers called for international action to protect the Tamil population after the defeat of the Tamil army by Sri Lankan forces.

    Tamils held signs saying ?War Criminals,? accusing the Sri Lankan government of genocide by denying aid groups and UN relief agencies access to the war-ravaged area. (More …)

    Tamils continue protest from behind barricade

    Unlike some past protests, Toronto’s roads remained open as several hundred Tamil supporters stood behind barricades across from the U.S. consulate on University Avenue today.

    The protest took place in spite of news that Tamil fighters had been defeated by Sri Lankan forces. The protesters urged both U.S. and Canadian governments to intervene in the conflict. (More …)

    Tamil protests continue after insurgency’s defeat

    Throngs of Toronto Tamils gathered at the United States consulate Monday, pleading for aid to their confederates in Sri Lanka as the country’s leaders declared victory over the secessionist Tamil Tigers and the death of its leader.

    In Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, Sinhalese publicly celebrated the end of a 26-year insurgency that took around 75,000 lives and welcomed the defeat of what they consider a deadly terrorist organization. (More …)

    Tamil-Canadian protestors appeal to Obama

    On Friday, May 15, several hundred Tamil-Canadians assembled in front of Toronto’s U.S. consulate, continuing a non-stop week of protests. The group chanted appeals for U.S. president Barack Obama to intervene in the Sri Lankan civil war, which they call a genocide.

    “President Obama save us!” one of the chant leaders shouted. “The Canadian government has failed us!”

    Later, as their numbers swelled, the protesters marched to Yonge Street and Dundas Street, where they staged a traffic-blocking sit-in. (More …)

    Tamil protests continue in Toronto

    Thousands of Canadian Tamils took to the streets of Toronto again in another bid to get the Canadian government to pressure Sri Lanka for a permanent cease fire.

    Protesters began to gather at the south end of Queen’s Park at noon on May 13. By 5:00 p.m. their ranks swelled to more than 15,000, police at the scene estimated.

    Tamil protestors block Gardiner Expressway, clash with police

    Tamil protestors, including children, stormed onto the Gardiner Expressway and occupied both east and westbound lanes for over five hours on Sunday, May 10 as part of the ongoing demonstration against the Canadian reaction to Sri Lanka’s current political situation.

    The demonstration began further uptown around Queen’s Park but began to move south throughout the afternoon. A smaller crowd of approximately 200 people arrived at the Spadina Avenue on ramp and briefly clashed with half a dozen police before taking over the ramp and highway.

    The protest hamstrung both the Gardiner and the Don Valley Parkway with both key arterial routes at least partially shut for a few hours.
