As one of the many sites collecting daily articles from the local papers, Spacing received a press release from City Hall today correcting some factual errors in Royson James’ piece in today’s Star, specifically regarding the powers of the Mayor of Toronto given to him by the City of Toronto Act, which James stated were “beyond those of any other mayor in Ontario.”

On the second full day of the city workers’ strike—June 23—Torontoist photographer Christopher Drost set up a camera rig in a window at the corner of Runnymede and Annette streets. Set to shoot one photo every ten minutes (and one every two minutes once the deals to end the strike were in place), the camera looked out towards the street and over two waste bins, one on the south and one on the north side of the street, snapping shots all day and all night for the whole rest of the strike.

The sign at the bottom of the Don Valley that says “Boycott Dove Products” has been there since June 2, 2008. The men and women who put it up are just waiting for the word: “This strike is over.”
Not because the company they work for has come to an agreement with them. No, they just want it to padlock the gates and let them finally collect severance pay, EI or both.

As the city strike nears four weeks, the number of unionized employees requesting to come back to work is on the rise.
On July 15, city hall indicated over 600 members of CUPE locals 416 and 79 had asked to cross the picket lines.

For 62 low-income families living in run-down, high-rent areas, the garbage bags piling up at nearby drop sites are not the cause of the big stink in Toronto’s city strike. Instead, it’s the news that construction on their affordable housing units has been pushed back indefinitely.
These families were scheduled to move into houses built by Habitat for Humanity Toronto. Some had already given notice to their current landlords. According to Neil Hetherington, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Toronto, the most emotional part of all this is telling families they can’t move into their new homes.

Striking municipal unions have angrily rejected the city’s latest contract offer, but many union members are giving it a good hard look all the same. City officials say that, as of Monday afternoon, more than 28,000 people had visited a special website that lays out the details of the proposed deal.

Relations between the city and its striking workers took a turn for the worse this afternoon when union leaders gathered at a Scarborough hotel to lambaste Mayor David Miller for taking negotiations public.
Earlier in the day, the mayor released to the media a detailed settlement offer to end the city-wide strike, now in its 18th day. The Canadian Union of Public Employees says the act crossed the line when it comes to honest negotiating.

Despite a sweltering hot day, odours from the nearby, much-reviled trash pile in the outdoor skating rink at Christie pits didn’t reach spectators gathered to watch the Maple Leafs, Toronto’s minor league ball club, square off against the Guelph Majors.
Nonetheless, the overflowing rim of the city’s most controversial mini-transfer station was visible from the bleachers. Anyone who approached the much-contested site would be treated to the bouquet of rotting refuse as contractors offloaded the final bags of local trash before the site was shut at 7 p.m.

VideoA vocal neighbourhood group fed up with the City using its popular park as a garbage dump took its protest all the way to City Hall Wednesday.
Members of Friends of Christie Pits Park showed up at Nathan Phillips Square carrying bags stuffed with fake garbage and placards that read, “Keep our parks beautiful” and “Parks are not dumps.”
