  Ready, set, Gapka: Susan Gapka runs for Kyle Rae’s seat in Ward 27

  The race for Ward 27 in Toronto’s upcoming fall election is getting attention for two reasons. The first is the crowd of candidates who have already signed up to replace 19-year council veteran Kyle Rae. The second is that two openly trans women are running, Enza Anderson and Susan Gapka.

  A win for either Anderson or Gapka would be a historic first in Canada. That being said, both candidates stress the election is about municipal politics, not their respective gender identities. Gapka herself couldn’t be clearer.

  Frustrated crowd disrupts recession meeting in downtown Toronto

  A panel of representatives from the federal Liberal, Green and NDP parties spoke to an aggravated crowd at the Church of the Holy Trinity in downtown Toronto last Tuesday. Politicians were frequently heckled as each described party platforms to pull out of recession.

  Liberal MP Derek Lee, NDP MP Tony Martin and Rebecca Harrison of the Green party, sat on a panel along with representatives from labour and anti-poverty groups.

  The town hall was organized by the Recession Relief Coalition (RRC). The group surveyed each federal party about social spending in areas such as housing and funding non-profit agencies.

  Chris Tindal enters race for Ward 27 against two trans women

  The race to replace Kyle Rae in Ward 27 is getting packed and interesting, with the potential that an out trans person could make it to city council for the first time ever in Canada.

  Enza Anderson, whose campaign is getting significant media attention, and Susan Gapka, a well-known activist within the queer community, are registered candidates within the ward. They are also two out trans women.

  Also in the race is fresh-faced former Green party candidate Chris Tindal. Ever respectful, Tindal understands the significance of a win for Anderson or Gapka.

  Toronto may get first transgendered councillor in 2010 election

  It’s possible that this coming fall George Smitherman will be our city’s first openly gay mayor. But Toronto’s October 2010 election could result in a council with more than one big – and queer -  first.

  Former ‘supermodel’ Enza Anderson is running to replace Kyle Rae in Toronto Centre-Rosedale. Rae was the first openly gay person elected to city council back in 1991. But he’s announced he will not be going for re-election, which means Anderson’s chances have just gone up.

  Winning would make Anderson the first out trans person ever to serve on a city council in Canada.

  Queen’s Park vista threatened by condo plan

  Queen’s Park may soon be sporting a strange protrusion.

  A proposal to replace the Four Seasons Hotel on Avenue Road with 48- and 44-storey condos has drawn howls of outrage from heritage advocates and even the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly because the new towers will poke up from the gables of the building, sullying the silhouette of one of Toronto’s best-known landmarks.

  By the time most of the city is leaving work today, we’ll know whether Toronto has won its controversial bid for the 2015 Pan Am Games. Phoning from the Toronto bid team’s headquarters in Guadalajara, Mexico, mayor David Miller is succinct about why he thinks the Toronto games would be a good thing.

  “I have to look at that from the city’s perspective. Sports has an important part to play, and the way these games have evolved, Toronto will get the benefit of hosting them. We’ll have our name known around the Americas, we’ll build very strong bonds between Latin America and Toronto, which is very significant with immigration from South America.”

  Liberian war survivor, child rights activist visits Toronto

  As nine-year-old Kimmie Weeks and his mother huddled together desperately on a cold concrete floor, he prayed they would survive.

  While trapped in one of Africa’s bloodiest civil wars, Weeks would soon learn that survival is all he could hope for.

  “It started with an explosion, and then there was gunfire everywhere… People started to run into their homes for shelter,” Weeks said. “My mom and I were on the floor, everyday missiles and rockets were falling on the houses around us.”

  Toronto council speaker Sandra Bussin is creating a minor radio-wave tempest after comments she made about conservative politician John Tory on his radio show last Friday.

  Ms. Bussin phoned the show Friday afternoon to defend Mayor David Miller, who had just announced his intention not to run for a third term in office.

  As protesters called George W. Bush a war criminal and collectively demanded his arrest, a grizzled man picked up a megaphone and announced himself as Dacajeweiah, a Mohawk name that translates to Splitting the Sky.

  Also known by his “colonialized name” John Boncore, when he took part in the historic 1971 prison riot at Attica State Correctional facility in New York State he went by another alias: John Hill. (More …)
