Will Richards drove in five and Craig Bate threw a complete game five-hitter as the London Majors took game one of the best-of-seven playoffs series with a convincing 11-1 win at Christie Pits on Sunday afternoon.
In the first inning, London’s offence provided all the runs Bate would need when Richards turned on a slider and drove the ball deep to right field for his first home run of the post season.

After rain washed out Wednesday’s start to the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs are set to open up their best-of-seven series against the London Majors on Sunday afternoon at Christie Pits.
The Leafs compiled a 1-3 record against the Majors but played two double-headers, which doesn’t suit the older and more experienced Leafs.

Kern Watts’ sacrifice fly in the 12th inning lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 6-5 win over the Brantford Red Sox at Christie Pits on Sunday afternoon.
Watts got a fastball from left-hander Steve Murray and launched it deep to left field, plating Jeremy Walker from third.

Despite a sweltering hot day, odours from the nearby, much-reviled trash pile in the outdoor skating rink at Christie pits didn’t reach spectators gathered to watch the Maple Leafs, Toronto’s minor league ball club, square off against the Guelph Majors.
Nonetheless, the overflowing rim of the city’s most controversial mini-transfer station was visible from the bleachers. Anyone who approached the much-contested site would be treated to the bouquet of rotting refuse as contractors offloaded the final bags of local trash before the site was shut at 7 p.m.

Watts tied the game in the seventh when he hit a moon shot that just cleared the right field fence.

Jeremy Ware hit a game-winning solo shot in the top of the seventh as the Guelph Royals defeated the Toronto Maple Leaf 5-4 to split a twin bill at the Christie Pits baseball diamond on Sunday afternoon.
With one out, Ware took an inside fastball and turned on it, launching it deep into the left-field trees, spoiling a great outing for Leafs reliever Jon Lockwood.

With two temporary garbage dumps nearly full just 13 days into the civic workers’ strike, the city is closing both and opening two new ones.
The Christie Pits site, the scene of ongoing protests from neighbours opposed to part of their park being turned into a garbage dump, will close to additional trash at 7 p.m. tomorrow, city officials said.

VideoA vocal neighbourhood group fed up with the City using its popular park as a garbage dump took its protest all the way to City Hall Wednesday.
Members of Friends of Christie Pits Park showed up at Nathan Phillips Square carrying bags stuffed with fake garbage and placards that read, “Keep our parks beautiful” and “Parks are not dumps.”

The strike by Toronto’s municipal workers has entered its second week, and although all sides are still talking, some residents are showing their frustration with the most visible sign of the labour dispute: the mounting piles of garbage.
About 24,000 city workers walked off the job on June 22 to back their demands for a new contract.

When the city announced on Thursday that it would be opening 19 mini dumpsites to deal with the build up of garbage brought on by the current outside workers strike, I was initially pleased. Although it seemed to signify that the city was digging in its heals and preparing for a long strike, I liked that it was offering an alternative to storing garbage in fly-riddled, rank heaps just outside of my door.
