Forest City Lovers’ Kat Burns wishes that her latest album, Carriage, came out before the hullabaloo of the recent G20 protests, due mostly to her track “Keep The Kids Inside.”

“Man, if we had released that one a week earlier, we would have made all sorts of money for commercials and stuff,” laughs the songwriting Whitby native and recent graduate of OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design).

A potentially missed opportunity, but if critical raves are any indication, the 11-track LP won’t need much help to go over with audiences and make some cash. The third in the Forest City Lovers’ canon and fourth for Burns herself, Carriage has been called the finest work to date from the Toronto-based pop-quartet – called “the best band you’ve never heard of” by Spin — with its emotive pop hooks like “Tell Me, Cancer” and playful jams such as “If I Were A Tree.”

“We talked about trying new arrangements, experimenting a little bit, because you want to have something that’s a step forward from the last record (2008’s Haunting Moon Sinking),” Burns said. “This one had a higher production value, I think. The sounds are bigger and more full.”

Burns aimed for a more layered, virtuosic release this time around for Carriage, and she got help to do it. With bassist Kyle Donnelly, violinist Mika Posen, and drummer Christian Ingelevics, Burns headed to a cabin in Beaver Valley, Ont. to hash out the songs. The album was then co-produced by Chris Stringer (The D’Urbervilles, Timbre Timbre) and James Bunton (Ohbijou). Born Ruffians’ frontman Luke Lalonde also makes an appearance on a duet. It’s quite a list for a project launched in 2006 to showcase Burns’ writing talents, though she is the first to note that Carriage’s roster was smaller than any other FCL release.

“I don’t want to say it was a democracy but everyone contributed in a way that felt right for them,” Burns said. “Sometimes a song might need something that I don’t play or vice versa. But this record had the least amount of musicians than any other before it. As layered and as intricate as it is, there had been a fairly small number of players.”

Forest City Lovers has an in-store record appearance at Soundscapes on Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. and plays The Great Hall on Aug. 12 at 9:30 p.m.

A throng of protesters, most of them visibly young, faced a grim line of armoured peace officers from Toronto, York and Peel regions.

Many held signs with the usual cocktail of social messages. Just as many held video cameras, point-and-shoot cameras, SLRs, you name it.

One of the group’s chants was “the world is watching.”

There were a couple of, “Fuck you fuckin’ pigs” characters in the bunch, but no-one moving violently. Others simply taunted officers for standing in the flowers and so on.

One waifish girl, looking college-age and middle class like most G20 protesters, kept a longer going, holding up the same peace sign as her line of friends.

“I hope you know I can’t hurt you,” she was saying. “Even if you took off your clothes and dropped all your weapons I couldn’t beat you.”

The police, as you’d expect, gave no sign whether they were moved to deep thoughts, waiting for orders to kick hippy ass or simply counting the minutes until supper.

When they were instructed to act, however, police charged like a Roman legion, thundering “Move!” in slurred unison like a colony of football teams.

The psychology of this strategy seems natural. You only have time to think about retreat from a thundering kevlar-clad herd.

Instant take-downs began happening. Protesters would disappeared into the hoard of police. Sometimes line of cops, joined bunny-hop style would extrude from the general mass to strike at some kid.

Suddenly some long-haired youth streaked past, four police in lightning pursuit. He was down on the ground being restrained by officers who had him by various limbs.

Like others present I lined up my camera to shoot the tousle and managed to snap one decent picture. While framing the shot I failed to notice the line of police become a two parts of a 90-degree corner.

The upright line found me suddenly. A bluish-black blur knocked to the ground. Somehow I still had the camera.

“Move!” officers yelled.

“I get it! I get it!” I shouted, scrambling away.

It occurred to me some cops might like hurting people.

The reason for clearing Queen’s Park this Saturday isn’t yet clear.

Apparently it happened after a group of masked agitators called the Black Bloc smashed windows and torched a police using a bait-and-switch strategy to elude police.

The Black Bloc crowd gave off a tense vibe during the G20 march earlier that that afternoon, with their black outfits, black-clad ninja faces and bad attitudes. They were more hostile to photographers than the police, who knocked me down but at least didn’t say, “Fuck off!”

Police believed they had intelligence that the dark-clad anarchists were shedding their outfits and blending with the public, which prompted police to conduct mass arrests.

The first I heard was a cell-phone rumour that downtown was getting cleared south of Bloor so G20 delegates could securely dine somewhere south of us.

I wouldn’t call that info rock-solid, but it gotme thinking, isn’t that what the G20 summit is about?

Dinner, I mean.

The apparently fruitless G20 meetings (or demonically successful, depending on how much you and your website think leaders darkly conspired) could have been conducted much more cheaply through video conference, telephone or Skype, for that matter. All they had to decide, apparently, was everyone cut your deficit – if, like, you want to.

But such efficiency isn’t the approach of these VIP meetups. After a hard day’s deliberating people want a nice dinner around a big table and then chill to the Canadian Tenors.

A billion and change worth of spending, the incarceration of teenagers, journalist and joggers and a smashed Urban Outfitters display is ultimately so politicians and spouses can eat scrumptious little dainties.

The arrogance of this circumstance is its epic banality.

Bon appetit.

Well, school is out, protests, one minor earthquake and the G20 have rocked the city and season finales are recently all wrapped for prime-time shows.

24 did its breathless, unmerciful final wrap and Lost’s big finish left everybody wondering once and forever what that stupid island was all about anyway.

Those shows were the lucky ones, closing shop at will with full honours and high ratings. Not all shows get to choose their death. As with any battleground for hearts, minds and dollars, some return victorious and others don’t.

Despite various predictions to the contrary, Stargate Universe gets to return next fall. Its season one ended as the last Stargate show standing, ever since Atlantis removed its visually stunning yet unengaging mode of bombast from the airwaves last December.

Recently Actor David Blue, who plays boy genius and sci fi everyfan Eli Wallace, closed out a post-finale broadcast for Space Channel’s sci fi news show Innerspace with a gushing thank-you to viewers who’ve stuck with the show.

“We appreciate beyond belief that you’ve come along for the ride with us and gave us a chance,” he said, adding, “You’ve got some great stuff coming next season, I promise.”

It was politic for Blue to say this, since at the time he faced a live audience of cheering fans. But Blue’s gratitude was conceivably more than strategic.

Faithful eyeballs, after all stand between renewal and oblivion.

Television trend-watchers have eagerly tarred SGU with the aura of failure since its coming-out ratings began sliding a few episodes in, when fans of SGU’s jauntier forbears realized they’d have to cope with moody vibes, edgy camera work and a focus on elements previous SG shows avoided like character depth and intelligent scripts.

Brain drain notwithstanding, SGU may now carry on grafting high-concept dysfunction à la Battlestar Galactica onto Stargate canon.

Television genre hybrids are risky. As in the Splice movie, what seems like a good idea might turn out deadly results. In the one-eyed world of TV, haploid seems safer.

Take Defying Gravity, which endured its own heat death before last Christmas.

Grey’s Anatomy producer James Parriott attempted to cross-breed mainstream relationship drama with hard sci fi and, despite an attractive cast, good writing and semi-plausible spaceship, Parriott’s chimera was euthanized – or, dare I say, aborted.

You would think twinning two well-liked genres would strengthen a show’s market share, for example by humanizing the tech-driven world of space travel. Instead two audiences are driven away. Sci fi jocks think, “Ew! Too much kissy-face! Not enough space battles!” while soccer moms think, “Ew! Astronauts!”

Which brings us to Flashforward, the now-concluded effort by Robert J. Sawyer and an impressive raft of Hollywood talent to filter the time-and-space musings of his likewise-named novel through TV conventions, such as cop drama.

Which, unfortunately, was canceled instead of V, ABC’s derivative adaptation of a derivative 80s show, which no long even has the benefit of Michael Ironside to keep things moving.

In Sawyer’s novel soul-searching physicists agonize about causing every person on earth to experience two minutes and change of their personal futures during a worldwide loss of consciousness. In the show scientists are largely displaced by violence-prone FBI agents. It’s worth noting it was co-produced by 24 mastermind Brannon Braga.

While Flashforward never approached the mass slaughter of 24, it had its share of shootings, stabbings, torture, knock-down drag-outs and car crashes in each episode.

“Nearly every other scene, my goodness yes,” Sawyer acknowledged. “There’s no question that there’s a sense on the part of the studio that what people want to see is lots of gunfights and lots of action and lots of people running around.”

All this mayhem (and one pregnancy) naturally allows characters to end up in a hospital, the show’s other main set, where several key characters spend their days as staff or patients.

“Cop and doctor shows are the two big popular formats in the United States,” Sawyer explained, fully serene about referencing these traditional genres.

When Sawyer made these comments ABC had blessed the season’s second half, so he was cautiously optimistic that the recipe might work.

The program still managed to insert key concepts from the book: a couple, very much in love, forsee end of end of their marriage and struggle against destiny to save it, people use a website called Mosaic to compare notes about their flash of futurity, a character learns he’ll be violently killed and struggles to prevent his death while another man bucks fate through suicide.

Where the show transcends the novel, however, is through film and TV’s power to show the collective impact of a worldwide blackout that makes everyone, everywhere a prophet.

In one scene, a stadium full of people fall down all at once. In another hundreds of bloodied and bewildered citizens crawl from cars that crashed while they were unconscious. On the day everyone predicted, Los Angeles becomes a fin de siècle block party.

What also works is moments where regular folks dwell on – pardon the expression – more everyday concerns about the future.

My personal favourite moment from the show is when an agent finds a guy doing the funky chicken in his briefs because in six months he’ll be employed.

Which actually gives this character an edge on most of the show’s cast, who are now between gigs, except for actor John Cho, who had to schedule his Flashforward scenes around shoots for the sequel to J.J. Ambrams’ dazzling Star Trek remake, where Cho plays Mr. Sulu.

Clearly no-one in showbiz can infallibly see six months ahead.

“There’s always pressure,” Sawyer admitted. “There are 400 people who work on making Flashforward every week. Their jobs are at stake.”

Sawyer also pointed out that, sci fi or not, scripted episodic drama is expensive (one season for Flashforward cost $100 million) and must must compete with much cheaper reality shows, where “drama” means some Orange Country trophy wife having a meltdown.

“There’s stuff at stake for those of us who work on the show personally, for ABC and the industry as a whole,” he said.

Sawyer felt he’d already succeeded even if the series were to fail, from this size of his paycheque this year alone.

“From my own personal point of view the money has been spectacular,” he said. “And the exposure for my books has been spectacular.”

The originating Flashforward novel alone spent 50 days in Amazon’s top 100.

However, can’t we all spare sympathy for the hapless characters of this poor show?

The last moment of their fictional lives was a second blackout and a breathless cascade of future moments that will never be realized.

As they hit the ground they remain unconscious forever.

Lush Amazon-inspired décor transformed the South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for the annual Brazilian Carnival Ball.

This year’s event included a VIP reception, three course dinner, and dessert buffet, but as always the carnival parade was the crown jewel of the evening. The spectacle featured 60 masqueraders in glittery, feathered costumes flown in from Brazil. They shimmyed and danced through the dining room to the delight of patrons.

The first Brazilian Ball took place in 1966 in a church basement. Missing the excitement of Carnival in her native Brazil, founder Anna Marie de Souza, sought to bring the festivities to Canada. The event is now one of the preeminent evenings of the Toronto social scene.

Guests and dignitaries included Prime Minister Steven Harper, Governor General Michaelle Jean, and Rio de Janeiro’s Governor Sergio Cabral.

Overall the night raised more than $3.2 million dollars for the Toronto East General Hospital.

With wedding season upon us, there was no better time for Bonnie Gordon to hold her annual Cake Show at the Artscape Wychwood Barns.

The annual event exhibited creations from students and alumni of the Bonnie Gordon Cake School in Toronto. Proceeds from the event were donated to the Stop Community Food Centre.

Day one of the two-day event, was closed to the public, and featured seminars for bakers to hone their business skills. Day two was open to the sweet toothed public, and allowed bakers to show off their cake-making and decorating skills in events like the Cupcake Challenge.

On display were breathtaking entries to the Cake Art Competition. These edible artworks, took baking to a whole other level with their meticulously crafted designs. There was also a Cake Tasting Contest where the crowd could sample entries and vote for the winner.

Baker Alexandra Pellegrino, who helped judge the Cake Art Competition, also had her own baking on display.

Pelagrino studied both visual art and baking at the Ontario College of Art and Design, and says she brings both disciplines together with those creations.

” It was a completely fluid transition because only the medium changed,” she said.

Unlike paint or sculpture, however, the medium of cake always disappears, especially when forks, plates and napkins are on hand.

As conventional advertising loses its impact, BlushPretty’s Beauty Board offers an interesting alternative for beauty companies looking to reach their early adopters.

For those unacquainted, The Beauty Board is a party where classic and niche beauty brands make their goods available for guests to experience. Representatives are on hand to talk about their brand and provide samples, and sheets are provided so that companies may receive feedback. In between product stations, guests indulge in gratis cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and at the end of the party, are given loot bags containing a plethora of product- all for a nominal ticket price.

Stephanie Daga is the founder of BlushPretty and puts the Beauty Board event together,” I’m a hair and make-up artist and I write my own blog,” said Daga, “People were always asking me for advice, and brands always wanted me to try stuff out. I wanted to give regular people a chance to try stuff out too and give brands customer feedback.”

Indeed the event seems to grow exponentially with each Beauty Board. This third installment featured 13 brands, a definite improvement from the 2 brands that participated in the inaugural party, which happened less than one year ago. Companies in attendance included Oil of Olay and Mary Kay, but also Cake Beauty and DaLish Cosmetics to name a few. The guest list was comprised of hard core beauty enthusiast and several bloggers, an important sector in this era where blogger opinion and word of mouth buzz can have a greater impact than traditional marketing.

While the event may sound like a carefully concocted corporate advertising trick, it’s actually more like an afternoon with your friends talking about beauty, only company representatives are there mixing right along. In fact, several of the companies there were started by entrepreneurs who also have a passion for product.

Andrea Pahn, founder of nail polish brand Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics painted curious customers nails and offered cocktails while telling them about her brand. “I remember when I started working and I couldn’t afford my rent and fancy shoes, but every time I looked at my nails and they were painted I always felt happy,” she said of her motive to start Cheeky Monkey. Ultimately, she left her marketing career to start Cheeky Monkey which now includes 42 colors of nail polish.

Playoff night in Toronto.

Hard to believe, but this is something the city hasn’t seen since Toronto’s basketball team, the Raptors, were eliminated in five games by the Orlando Magic over two years ago on Apr. 28, 2008. The last time a Toronto team won a game was four days earlier on Apr. 24.

But enough about basketball. Tonight is all about Canada’s national sport of lacrosse with the Toronto Rock (9-7) battling the Buffalo Bandits (8-8). Winner of tonight’s game will face the victor from the Orlando – Boston game next weekend.

Toronto captain Colin Doyle will face-off for the Rock in his 12th consecutive postseason. Rock super-rookies Garrett Billings and Stephan Leblanc will get their first tastes of life after the regular season tonight.

Standing in their way are the Buffalo Bandits, who are no strangers to the postseason, making their eighth consecutive trip. Both teams have met only once previously in the playoffs, a 19-10 Bandits thrashing back in 2004.

A couple interesting similarities between the two teams: both scored a combined 34 goals against each other during their three regular season matches (Buffalo won the season series 2-1) and both teams had to win their final regular season game to advance to the playoffs. Fortunately for the Rock, their victory also guaranteed them a home date in the first round at the Air Canada Centre where they went 6-2 in the regular season.

This will be the Rock’s first playoff game since 2007 when they lost 10-6 to the Rochester Knighthawks. The time the Rock won a playoff game? Back on May 14, 2010, when they defeated the now defunct Arizona Sting 19-13 to collect their fifth championship in seven years.

Last Thursday, 300 opera enthusiasts and oenophiles came out to support the Canadian Opera Company’s 2010 Fine Wine Auction at Crush Wine Bar.

Hopes were high this year after $250,000 worth of premier vintages were donated for the cause—a record amount for the COC wine auction.

Alongside the COC enthusiasts, the wine auction drew folks who may not have otherwise attended. There were several serious wine collectors at the fundraiser completely fixated on the live and silent auction offerings. They planned their strategy, while other patrons sipped wine, munched on delicious artisinal fromage from the Cheese Boutique and oysters on the half shell.

Wine collector Laura Holmes was at the bar meticulously pouring over the program of auction items . “If I’m going to spend on [wine] I want it to be something worthwhile, value for money. Here is a good place to do it. It’s all in support of a really good cause. There are a lot of rare bottles that can get expensive but you can find gems among the offerings, especially among the silent auction. There are a lot of good deals. [For the live auction] I’m going to wait for the first round to go throughand the bidding high to go down, then I’m going to bid,” she said

Although the 1970 Chateau Petrus was anticipated to be the most coveted bottle, it was the 1982 Chateau LaFleur that sold for the highest amount at $3200. For people less interested in premier vintages there were other fabulous goodies available in the silent auction like a Jaguar Experiential Drive Program and black truffles.

Last weekend, Windfall’s Buy Design annual fundraiser resembled a time warp into a 1930s small town carnival. Themed, “Spring Social”, guests were treated to a bake sale, hat auction, candy stand and balloon popping game alongside the typical live and silent auction.

A perfect compliment to the carefully planned décor and details were the guests who raided relative’s closets, scoured vintage shops and researched accessories for the perfect outfit. Most of the crowd came dressed in theme.

Vanessa Rienau bought a ticket to the party after a friend sent her an invite.

“It’s a great cause,” Rienau said, “and I had so much fun shopping today for the perfect outfit. I wish there were more events like this in the city.”

While many of the guests rocked vintage garb, some guests even went so far as to make their own clothing specifically for the event. For Lee and Fran Bacon, the Buy Design Spring Social was a family affair.

“We researched together online what they wore in the thirties, then we ordered patterns from that time period and made our dresses,” said Lee. “To accessorize we used pieces from my Grandmother’s closet.”

An honourable mention also goes to Amy Shafey who designed and made her dress out of paper bags as a cheeky nod to the depression.

While the evening was full of fun and fashion the night was also for a great cause. The proceeds went toward Windfall, Canada’s only new clothing bank, and Fashion File television personality Adrian Manella hosted the event for the fifth year.

“Clothing is like armor,” Manella said. “Everyone should have the dignity of being able to wear new clothes.”

For the Toronto Rock the math was overtly simple: win and you’re in.

Clearly taking this to heart, the Rock displayed past championship form in a 15-7 demolition of the Rochester Knighthawks, in front of 9,959 raucous supporters at the Air Canada Centre Friday.

With the win, the Rock guaranteed themselves a post-season game but a home date was still in the offing after the final buzzer.

So the Rock played another type of game: waiting.

If the Orlando Titans beat the Buffalo Bandits, Toronto would host an Eastern Conference semi-final game on May 1.

Minutes later they got their wish as the Titans beat Buffalo 9-7.

Given what was on the line Friday night, it was easy to assume a close, tight-checking game between two rivals.

Early in the first quarter that’s exactly what fans were treated to as both teams game out gunning.

Rochester found the back of the net first, scoring two goals after six minutes of play.

The Rock took over the game from there.

Blaine Manning scored back-to-back goals, just over three minutes apart, to tie the game.

Mike Hominuck and rookie sensation Garrett Billings doubled the lead to 4-2 after the opening 15 minutes.

Both teams started slowly in the second quarter but Toronto got the jump off at 4:50 when Rock defender Mike Hobbins waltz in untouched and beat Knighthawks keeper Aaron Bold, .

Over 30 seconds later Stephan Leblanc made it 6-2, followed by Hobbins’ second of the game, just over two minutes later, to chase Bold.

Toronto owned a dominating 9-3 lead after 30 minutes.

In the second half, the Rock refused to relent.

Under a minute in to the third, Rock goalkeeper Bob Watson found captain Colin Doyle with a Hail Mary pass.

Doyle raced in and got his 22nd of the year on a pretty backhand.

Creighton Reid and Leblanc later scored on back to back breakaways to make it 11-3 before the ‘Hawks Craig Point fired his second of the game past Watson.

In a feisty final quarter, both teams traded goals and punches with the Rock standing tall at the final buzzer.

After the game, Doyle saluted the fans and promised a successful postseason.

The game could also be seen as a bit of a revenge match for Toronto because the Knighthawks are responsible for eliminating the Rock in their past two playoff appearances.

While the words, ’sample sale’ usually conjure up images of long lines and women fighting over clothing, clothing stylist Luis Zulayhka took another tack with his inaugural Style On Top event.

Last Sunday, ladies were invited downtown to the The Cryptic Canvas gallery to participate in a more experiential type of sample sale. Cupcakes, cocktails and a runway fashion show were among the incentives for guests.

“I want my guests to be pampered like the models. You don’t need to be invited to Fashion Week to enjoy fashion. There’s so much talent around Canada that everyone should have access,” Zulayhka said of his motive for the show.

Indeed, there was a personal touch and practical aspect to Style on Top. Instead of doing a runway show exhibiting pieces a season ahead, Zulayhka went against the grain and featured looks that could be worn now. He also personally greeted each guest and made himself available after the fashion show to help them select the right pieces to mix in with their existing wardrobe.

“The word fashion sometimes scares people and limits them. Fashion is not just brands, it’s a concept, and that’s what we’re about,” Zulayhka said. “Hopefully the [fashion] show can help people put their clothing together at home.”

Despite the laid back atmosphere, the fashion was still fierce. Ten Canadian clothing lines participated in the event, including Tilo Scarves, which have been spotted on supermodel Giselle Bundchen and actor/singer Jennifer Lopez. Show-stopping hipster jewellery by Halifax designers Chloé Comme Parris were also available and caught the eye of several fashionistas.

If you missed out, never fear as Zulayhka is hoping to throw the event each season – Hooray!

Prohibition has returned. But, thankfully, for one night only.

The shadows of this notorious era crept back into view as the theme of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s 6th annual Massive Party Thursday night.

In addition, the night was geared toward Toronto’s young art patrons, as the AGO hosted an estimated 1,800 guests who got into the spirit of things by mingling and schmoozing dressed as wise guys and flappers.

Tenured art enthusiast Krystyne Griffin applauded the AGO for reaching out to the younger demographic.

“Beauty belongs in art galleries and everyone is looking wonderful and full of life,” Griffin said. “Youth gives us different ways of looking at things and I feel that is important. I feel surrounded by imagination.”

Canadian artist Bruno Billio also played a major role in the night by transforming the AGO’s Walker Court with Asian-style décor, leading to hungry patrons being treated to dim sum and cold tea spritzers poured from teapots to keep the liquor on the low. The party also continued on the main floor and basement where guests were spotted dancing the night away.

Birthday girl Rhonda Nemeth decided to have her celebration at this year’s Massive Party. Dressed as a gangster, she came with an entourage of friends who were also in theme. “I’ve wanted to come [to the Massive Party] for years,” she said, “But I’ve always left it too long and by the time I went to get tickets they were sold out. This year I was determined.”

While the party was the main event for the evening, the fourth and fifth floors were made available so guests could explore and enjoy the gallery.

The AGO also aptly named the night’s password “Moonshine” to go along with the night’s theme.

Councillor Kyle Rae wants the right to upset the Toronto a la Cart program.

The head of the city’s economic development committee takes over where most agree the Toronto Public Health board failed when it comes to adding some more exotic choices to the city’s street meat selection.

The program has been heavily criticized for being too regulated and has been skewered by its own vendors who feel they’ve bought into a business disaster, and the city’s existing hot dog vendors who feel they’ve been shut out and relegated to second-class street meat by the entire process.

It was a fashion double-header, (and so much more), at the Liberty Grande when supermodel Aygness Deyn appeared to DJ a set after the anticipated Betsey Johnson fashion show.

With Project Runway Canada’s Sunny Fong schmoozing at a booth and Victoria Secret lingerie model Andi Muise on the dance floor kicking up her heels, there was plenty to turn the heads of fashion victims such as Jamie Wilford.

“We love Betsey. Our dresses are [from her line] but we came to see Aygness Deyn,” Wilford said. “She’s the androgynous trailblazer for supermodels of our time.”

Soaking up the last bit of Toronto Fall 2010 Fashion Week, fashion mavens arrived fully coiffed, invoking the question of whether the best fashion show was on stage or in the crowd.

Although Betsey debuted her line during New York Fashion Week, many were still excited for the taste of her genius, such as admirer Alexandra Low.

“We had to see it,” she said. “We love Betsey Johnson and live moments from her store. We’re always in there.”

Recently, Toronto has made life difficult for teams on the playoff bubble but not on Wednesday night.

The New York Rangers, in a must-win scenario, dismantled the lacklustre Leafs 5-1 at Madison Square Garden.

The win pushed the Rangers to 84 points, one behind 8th place Boston and two behind 7th ranked Philadelphia.

New York’s playoff hopes are very much alive because they face the Flyers in a back-to-back set to close out the season, starting on Friday night at MSG.

Prospal scored the winner at 10:26 of the first period when he beat Jonas Gustavsson with a wrist shot from the left face off circle.

Erik Christensen (2), Olli Jokinen and Aaron Voros scored for the Rangers (37-33-10).

Dion Phaneuf scored the lone goal for the Leafs (29-28-14) as they travel to Montreal on Saturday night for their final game of the season. Toronto went 0-for-4 with the man advantage and have now scored one goal in their last nine road games, a 1-for-45 stretch.

A night after getting the hook during a 5-2 loss to Buffalo, Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 26 shots. Gustavsson stopped 27 of 32.

New York got off to a dream start with a three-goal first period.

Christensen opened the scoring 21 seconds into the game, jamming home a rebound in the crease.

The Rangers took a 2-0 lead at 10:26 when Prospal tapped the puck into the empty net.

Gustavsson stopped Olli Jokinen on a breakaway but Prospal followed up on the play and had a wide-open net to shoot at.

Christensen got his second of the night thirty seconds later when he beat Gustavsson through the legs on a breakaway.

Phaneuf got the Leafs on the board at 8:09 of the third when his slap shot from the right point beat Lundqvist low to the glove side. It was his first goal since coming to Toronto on Jan. 31 and his first in 25 games.

Two goals by New York pushed the lead to 5-1.

Jokinen scored on a slap shot from the right circle at 10:51 and, under two minutes later, Voros beat Gustavsson with a wrist shot from the low slot.
