A throng of protesters, most of them visibly young, faced a grim line of armoured peace officers from Toronto, York and Peel regions.
Many held signs with the usual cocktail of social messages. Just as many held video cameras, point-and-shoot cameras, SLRs, you name it.
One of the group’s chants was “the world is watching.”
There were a couple of, “Fuck you fuckin’ pigs” characters in the bunch, but no-one moving violently. Others simply taunted officers for standing in the flowers and so on.

Councillor Kyle Rae wants the right to upset the Toronto a la Cart program.
The head of the city’s economic development committee takes over where most agree the Toronto Public Health board failed when it comes to adding some more exotic choices to the city’s street meat selection.
The program has been heavily criticized for being too regulated and has been skewered by its own vendors who feel they’ve bought into a business disaster, and the city’s existing hot dog vendors who feel they’ve been shut out and relegated to second-class street meat by the entire process.

The city of Toronto knows that its waterfront areas are a favorite for residents and tourists. They are working to promote a clean and green environment while building a network of parks and public spaces.
One of the plans underway is to build a continuous and publicly accessible promenade along the waterfront.
By late Spring 2010 the Revitalizing Queen’s Quay Boulevard will begin. During the past three years there has been work on the the Wave decks, the Martin Goodman trails, the walkway, various beaches and parks according to MP Olivia Chow.

Sparks flew at the first debate of the mayor’s race Monday night with candidates George Smitherman and Rocco Rossi saving their most vicious one-liners for each other as all six major candidates weighed in on taxes, transit, bike lanes, asset sales and other issues dominating the early days of the campaign.
Mr. Smitherman, the former deputy premier, and Mr. Rossi, former top fundraiser for the federal Liberals, squared off over Mr. Rossi’s proposal to sell Toronto Hydro to help pay down Toronto’s debt.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada condemns the Harper government’s decision to close Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) offices in Vancouver, Toronto and Halifax. The union maintains that the closure of the three offices will make it substantially harder for individuals from marginalized groups to launch human rights complaints.
The three offices slated for closure received 70 per cent of all signed complaints to the CHRC in 2008.

A man accused of stealing jewels from an 83-year-old woman on her hospital deathbed was remanded in police custody Monday after a brief court appearance.
Marcos Marinoni, 26, was arrested Saturday near Keele St. and Finch Ave. W. in connection with the theft from Toronto East General Hospital.

Relations have been less-than-perfect between TTC staff and Toronto riders lately but at least they can handle a puck for charity.
Members of the ATU Local 113 all-star team managed to spread some love in a fundraising face-off with NHL Alumni at a fairly crowded Ted Reeve Arena for Multiple Sclerosis .
TTC general manager Gary Webster says he would rather see press about feel-good happenings like Saturday night’s game instead of media stinkers like napping ticket takers, scandal-plagued officials and an ill-tempered email from Webster, himself, berating transit workers in February.

A pedestrian has been charged after he walked in to the path of a streetcar on Sunday evening.
The accident happened just before 6 p.m. when the pedestrian walked on to the streetcar tracks on Spadina Ave. near Grange Ave. He was hit by a southbound streetcar.
Police allege that the victim had been drinking prior to the crash. He has been charged with failing to yield to an oncoming vehicle.
He suffered cuts to his face, but is expected to survive.

People fearful of coyotes snatching dogs and cats must learn to live with the wild animals and take precautions, says Toronto Councillor Doug Holyday. In the wake of increasing concern, Holyday said Sunday he will recommend city parks officials look at preparing tips about living with coyotes in their neighbourhoods.
“If we want natural areas in the city, it’s going to attract wildlife,” he said.

The owners of an exotic fish store say a vandal with knowledge of how fish tanks operate killed hundreds of fish and expensive coral in their store Wednesday afternoon.
Adam Ghavari, co-owner of Indoor Jungle at 1285 Kennedy Rd., believes someone poured either chlorine or bleach into a central system that connects a wall of fish tanks, killing 700 fish and 200 pieces of coral.

A 17-year-old Siberian tiger is the latest animal to die at the Toronto Zoo.
Tonghua died Sunday around 8:30 p.m. as he was coming out of sedation. Zoo veterinarians had tranquilized the 400-pound cat to run a battery of tests after he began “acting a bit strange,” staggering and refusing food on the weekend.

The race for Ward 27 in Toronto’s upcoming fall election is getting attention for two reasons. The first is the crowd of candidates who have already signed up to replace 19-year council veteran Kyle Rae. The second is that two openly trans women are running, Enza Anderson and Susan Gapka.
A win for either Anderson or Gapka would be a historic first in Canada. That being said, both candidates stress the election is about municipal politics, not their respective gender identities. Gapka herself couldn’t be clearer.

A panel of representatives from the federal Liberal, Green and NDP parties spoke to an aggravated crowd at the Church of the Holy Trinity in downtown Toronto last Tuesday. Politicians were frequently heckled as each described party platforms to pull out of recession.
Liberal MP Derek Lee, NDP MP Tony Martin and Rebecca Harrison of the Green party, sat on a panel along with representatives from labour and anti-poverty groups.
The town hall was organized by the Recession Relief Coalition (RRC). The group surveyed each federal party about social spending in areas such as housing and funding non-profit agencies.

Fellow TTC commissioners are lining up to back chairman Adam Giambrone.
Councillor Sandra Bussin said she doesn’t see the connection between the personal trials of Giambrone and his day job as head of the TTC.
“He stepped down from the mayoralty (race), it doesn’t mean he has to step down from chair of the TTC, or step down as a councillor,” she said Thursday. “I think it’s far too punitive and I’m very disappointed in the constant calls for somebody to be stripped of all of his roles for the city.”
