Depressed workers tend to suffer alone rather than sharing their problems with colleagues

(NewsFix) A research looked at 4000 Australians with depressions and stress related problems and found that there was overwhelming evidence of people with depression suffering in silence instead of talking to their co-workers about it. The researchers surveyed the participants and found that nine out of 10 preferred to be silent about their problem. This is because they are worried about damaging their career by revealing their mental problems.

89% of the participants believed the stigma could be decreased in work place if mental health problems got the same care that was given to physical illnesses. 79% wanted a mental health policy to be introduced in the workplace prohibiting organizations from discrimination against people with depression or other mental problems.

“Organizations need to make available easy to find, anonymously accessed, resources and information” says the study author Graeme Cowen.
