Keep lifting the groceries

Challenging your muscles regularly will help combat the loss of muscle that comes with ageing.
Did you know that nearly half of women aged 65 to 74 cannot lift ten pounds? In other words, they can’t carry a typical bag of groceries. The reason is sarcopenia - the loss of muscle mass that comes with ageing. Over 30, you lose around one per cent of your muscle mass each year. This cumulative weakness is disabling and leads to various health problems.

That’s why doctors at the Mayo Clinic are advising you challenge your muscles for 20 to 30 minutes, three times a week. Try using simple free weights, elastic resistance bands or even your own body weight as resistance in exercise. You can keep your muscles in good working order, however old you are, and you’ll be able to keep on carrying your own shopping.
