A study shows that the majority of those undergoing facial laser resurfacing to improve their skin are satisfied with the results.
In facial laser resurfacing, a pulsed wave carbon dioxide laser is used to improve the appearance and elasticity of the skin. It’s a treatment that patients often have very high expectations of - so researchers at Stanford University Medical Center were interested in what they thought of the outcome.
They learned that 89 per cent of those treated, in a survey of 178 patients, were happy with the results of facial laser resurfacing. Those who were most happy were those who had reasonable expectations of the treatment - that it would give a minimal to moderate improvement in their skin. Those who had expected more - especially those who thought it would improve their self-esteem - were more likely to be disappointed, not surprisingly! Moreover, 12 per cent felt they had a pre-existing facial disfigurement. This group was also more likely to be dissatisfied with the outcome. This survey gives valuable guidelines to surgeons assessing people for facial laser skin resurfacing.
