Nearly eight million Americans are troubled by excessive sweating, according to a study.
As Europe experiences an unprecedented heatwave it’s easy to dismiss sweating as a normal response. But according to a new study from Saint Louis University School of Medicine, excessive or abnormal sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, is a real problem for many.
They surveyed 150,000 households in the USA, making it the largest ever study of hyperhidrosis. The study, if extended to the whole population, suggested that 7.8 million Americans have a sweat problem. Half of those affected say it makes them feel less confident, and a third become frustrated carrying out daily activities. One quarter feel depressed and say hyperhidrosis has an adverse effect on work or social activities.
You may have hyperhidrosis if you sweat even in cool environment or if your sweating is brought on by stress. Another telltale sign is having to change your shirt or blouse during the day because of sweating or having to buy new clothing often because you spoil garments with sweat stains. There are treatments available including both oral and topical medications. And trials are underway using Botox as a potential treatment for hyperhidrosis.
