It’s time to finally get rid of those obnoxious diet books for a new research has indicated that older individuals can enhance their weight loss programs by drinking two glasses of water before meals.
Researchers at Virginia Tech conducted a study in middle-aged and older adults before arriving at this conclusion. They divided participants aged between 55 and 75 years into two groups. One group was assigned to a low-fat, low-calorie diet for 12 weeks, while the other group was asked to consume normal meals, but to drink two glasses of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The group that drank water before meals lost 15.5 pounds at the end of 12 weeks as compared to 11 pounds in the diet group. Previous studies by the same group of researchers had shown that older adults consumed 75 and 90 fewer calories at the meal if they drank water prior to commencing eating.

Senior study author Brenda Davy, an associate professor in the department of human nutrition, foods and exercise at Virginia Tech, said that the researchers were apprehensive whether the water drinkers would compensate for lesser food at meals by eating other stuff during day time. However those fears were unfounded, suggesting that water not only makes a person feel full, but may also compensate for nutrition.

Davy said that the difficulty for people is to keep the weight lost after any dietary program away. In their follow-up of the participants at 12 months, the researchers found that those who continued to drink water prior to meals not only managed to keep the pounds off, but also lost additional weight.

“People should drink more water and less sugary, high-calorie drinks. It’s a simple way to facilitate weight management,” Professor Davy said.

Funded by the charity, The Institute for Public Health and Water Research, this study said that water probably facilitated weight loss as it filled up the stomach without adding any calories.
