No Need to Delay Pregnancy After Miscarriage
Doctors in Scotland revealed a study that states there is no need to wait after having a miscarriage. It further states that a woman has a better chance of conceiving if they try to conceive within the six moths period following a miscarriage. The study looked a women who were hospitalized after a miscarriage during their first pregnancy and shortly after became pregnant during, 1981 through 2000.
In the study among the women who conceived during the six months following a miscarriage, it was found that 85% continued to have a health pregnancy and baby. This leads the doctors to believe it is unnecessary to hold off conception after a miscarriage. The study recommends that current medical advice that suggests that a women hold off and wait be changed. The doctors who participated in the study state that current medical advice that ask women to hold off conception until after the six month period following a miscarriage was based on women having babies at a younger age. It is now believed that because women hold off and have children at an older age, holding off six months can actually reduce their chances of conception. The guidelines are outdated and need to be changed.
Women who are of advanced maternal age, 35 years and older, have a harder time conceiving. Women over 40 years of age, have a higher chance of miscarriage in general. If someone who is advance maternal age holds off six months, due to a miscarriage, there overall chance of conceiving drops, as the continue to age. Women over 40 have a 40% chance of miscarriage. While women of the general population only have a 20% chance. When giving advice on future conception after miscarriage the woman’s age should be considered. Currently, Britain’s Royal College does not advice anyone to wait to conceive after miscarriage. They do have updated medical guidelines in this area.
