While the words, ’sample sale’ usually conjure up images of long lines and women fighting over clothing, clothing stylist Luis Zulayhka took another tack with his inaugural Style On Top event.

Last Sunday, ladies were invited downtown to the The Cryptic Canvas gallery to participate in a more experiential type of sample sale. Cupcakes, cocktails and a runway fashion show were among the incentives for guests.

“I want my guests to be pampered like the models. You don’t need to be invited to Fashion Week to enjoy fashion. There’s so much talent around Canada that everyone should have access,” Zulayhka said of his motive for the show.

Indeed, there was a personal touch and practical aspect to Style on Top. Instead of doing a runway show exhibiting pieces a season ahead, Zulayhka went against the grain and featured looks that could be worn now. He also personally greeted each guest and made himself available after the fashion show to help them select the right pieces to mix in with their existing wardrobe.

“The word fashion sometimes scares people and limits them. Fashion is not just brands, it’s a concept, and that’s what we’re about,” Zulayhka said. “Hopefully the [fashion] show can help people put their clothing together at home.”

Despite the laid back atmosphere, the fashion was still fierce. Ten Canadian clothing lines participated in the event, including Tilo Scarves, which have been spotted on supermodel Giselle Bundchen and actor/singer Jennifer Lopez. Show-stopping hipster jewellery by Halifax designers Chloé Comme Parris were also available and caught the eye of several fashionistas.

If you missed out, never fear as Zulayhka is hoping to throw the event each season - Hooray!
