They ended Montreal’s pursuit of seven consecutive wins and ended Jaroslav Halak’s run of six-straight victories in a narrow 3-2 shootout win at the Air Canada Centre.
John Mitchell beat Halak with a tidy backhand in round three and Jonas Gustavsson turned away Brian Gionta to secure the win.
Overtime was a rousing rendition of pond hockey. The session went without a whistle as both teams pressed for the winner. Gustavsson stopped three in O.T. and Halak turned aside two in the extra session.
Montreal leads the season series three games to two with one left to play. The last four games between these timeless rivals have now gone to extra time.
This isn’t the first time the Leafs have snuffed a significant winning streak this year. They halted the Ottawa Senators’ pursuit of 12 straight with a 5-0 win on Feb. 6.
Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel scored for Toronto (26-34-12). The Leafs have now won five consecutive at home and have six wins in their last seven.
Gustavsson (14-13-8) turned aside 23 shots in regulation. He has won his last five starts.
Gionta (2) scored for the Canadiens (36-29-7). Montreal has the same number of points as the Senators and the Flyers (79) but remain seventh in the Eastern Conference because they have one less win. Tomas Plekanec remains at 99 goals for his career.
Halak (23-10-3) stopped 31 shots in regulation. He ends up one win shy of the all-time Canadiens’ record of seven straight, set by Jose Theodore in 2002.
Bozak opened the scoring on the power play at 16:05 of the opening period.
Halak stopped Dion Phaneuf’s point shot but the puck went to Nikolai Kulemin at the top of the crease. He banged the rebound off the right post but it bounced to Bozak, who tapped it into the empty net for his seventh of the year.
Montreal tied the game 2:21 later when Gionta raced down the right side and beat Gustavsson to the short side with a backhand for his 22nd of the season.
Kessel gave the Leafs a 2-1 lead at 18:15 of the second period when he took a Kulemin pass and wired a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Halak for his 28th of the year. Kessel has goals in three straight games and five in his last five games.
Montreal tied the game at 13:54 of the third period on the power play when Gionta tipped a Scott Gomez point shot for his second of the night.
Gionta positioned himself in the low slot and tipped the puck through his legs and by the left leg of a sliding Gustavsson.
