After blowing two third-period leads in their previous three games, Toronto opened up a 3-0 spread after one and cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre.
Prior to the game, there was a moment of silence for Brendan Burke. The son of Leafs general manager Brian Burke, Brendan was tragically killed in an auto accident on Friday afternoon in Wayne County, Ind.
Phil Kessel (2), Luke Schenn (2) and Tyler Bozak scored for Toronto (19-29-11) as they even the season series with the Senators at 2-2. Dion Phaneuf registered his first point with the Leafs, assisting on Kessel’s first goal.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere (6-8-5) stopped 30 shots for his second shut out in as many starts. Previously, he blanked the Devils 3-0 on Feb.3.
Ottawa (33-22-4) had its 11-game winning streak snapped. Their last defeat was a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of the Florida Panthers on Jan.12. Jason Spezza had his consecutive goal-scoring streak stopped at eight games.
Brian Elliott (19-12-3) had his consecutive victory streak broken at nine games. He allowed four goals on 30 shots and was pulled in favour of Pascal Leclaire to start the third. Leclaire turned away six of seven.
Kessel notched the power-play winner at 4:44 of the first period.
Phaneuf blasted a point shot off the right post and Kessel picked up the rebound before sliding the puck under the arm of Elliott. The Leafs have scored three power-play goals in their last six chances.
Schenn gave the Leafs a 2-0 lead at 16:15 on a slap shot that leaked through Elliott and Bozak upped the lead to 3-0 under thirty seconds later.
Kessel got his second of the night and 20th of the year at 18:43 of the second when his wrist shot beat Elliott to the blocker side.
Schenn made it 5-0 at 8:17 of the third when he blasted a slap shot over the glove hand of Leclaire.
Giguere stopped eight shots in the third to preserve the shut out.
