With fan favourites Lanny McDonald, Dave ‘Tiger’ Williams and Norman Ullman on hand for a love in and ceremonial face off, Toronto lost its fourth consecutive in a 5-3 setback against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.
The winning goal came at 12:37 of a three-goal second period for the Kings when Dustin Brown took the puck off Wayne Primeau and centred it to Jarret Stoll who beat Jonas Gustavsson with a backhand.
Drew Doughty, Ryan Smyth, Jack Johnson and Alexander Frolov also scored for the Kings (30-19-3). Los Angeles now has 63 points, good enough for sixth in the Western Conference, two behind fifth-place Phoenix. Brown had three assists in the second period.
Jonathan Quick stopped 25 for his 28th win of the year.
Niklas Hagman scored twice and Nikolai Kulemin had the other goal for the Leafs (17-27-10) as they own a paltry 2-8-1 record in their last 11 games. After having his point-scoring streak stopped at seven games in a 2-0 loss to Florida on Jan. 23., Phil Kessel recorded an assist and now has one goal and eight helpers in his last nine games.
Gustavsson stopped 28 shots in his 12th loss of the season.
The Kings took a 1-0 lead at 11:27 of the first period with a power-play goal when Doughty beat a screened Gustavsson with a blast from the point. The Leafs have given up the first goal in 37 games this year.
Kulemin tied the game over five minutes later with a wrist shot that Quick fanned on.
Johnson and Hagman exchanged goals seven minutes apart in the second but Stoll and Smyth gave the Kings a 4-2 at the end of 40 minutes.
Hagman cut the deficit to 4-3 at 18:42 of the third but Frolov finished off Toronto with an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining.
The Leafs are now 0-25-5 when trailing after two periods.
