NHL (27), Philadelphia Flyers (3), Toronto Maple Leafs (41), Wachovia CenterDaniel Briere scored two goals and Chris Pronger had three assists as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 at Wachovia Center on Wednesday night.
Dan Carcillo scored the winner at 10:13 of the second period on a nice individual effort. He sent Luke Schenn onto his stomach with a left and right move, fell to one knee, got up and put Jonas Gustavsson on the deck before going around him for an easy tap-in.
Brad Richards, Danny Syvret and James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Flyers (20-19-3). Briere notched his 500th NHL point on his second goal at 4:54 of the third period.
Michael Leighton (6-4-1), signed off waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 15, stopped 30 shots for the win.
Nikolai Kulemin and Alexi Ponikarovsky scored for Toronto (15-20-9) as the Leafs fall to 7-12-4 on the road. They finish their two-game road trip when they face the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena on Friday night.
Gustavsson (8-8-7) turned away 26 in the loss.
Philadelphia went 3-for-6 with the man advantage while the Leafs went 0-4.
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead on the power play at 4:11 of the first period when Briere banged an errant shot into the top half of the net by a diving Gustavsson.
Philadelphia doubled the lead at 19:09 of the first when Syvret drilled a slap shot from the point, that beat Gustavsson high to the glove.
The only goal of the second came at 10:13 when Carcillo made it 3-0 for the Flyers.
In the third, Briere, Richards and van Riemsdyk scored for Philadelphia while Kulemin and Ponikarovsky replied for Toronto.

Don’t be so hard on my Leafs ok? They tried! They showed a lot of heart…
Did you know they lead the league in shots per game? Too bad nobody on that team can score though…

I didn’t think I was particularly hard on them…they are what they are and a game story is void of opinion…is it not? Maybe the headline buts that’s more to grab people..looking forward to the game against the Sabres on Friday. Maybe more difficult to keep my emotions in check for that one…at the very least you read the story and that makes me happy
