For those still trying to find some last-minute gifts, here is a list of some notable titles out this week.

Sequels is the name of the game, with some of the year’s most popular authors releasing follow-ups just in time for holiday reading.

This week Greg Mortensen released “Stones and Schools,” the continuing story of his quest to promote literacy in rural Pakistan. The series’ first installment, “Three Cups of Tea,” was well-received among Canadian audiences on its release in 2001.

Mortensen’s first spin-off was a kids edition. The idea of reformatting non-fiction for younger audiences is an interesting trend, also seen in the re-release of Michael Pollen’s award-winning The Omnivore’s Dilemma.

The second notable pick for the week will have Sue Grafton fans rejoicing. The author of the Alphabet Mystery series, which boasts a whopping 21 books to date, released U is for Undertow. The book debuted at #1 on the New York Times best seller list for the week of December 20th. A great fireside read for the chilly weeks ahead.

For fans of Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the best-selling Eat, Pray, Love, a preview of her February sequel Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage is available this month in O Magazine and Chatelaine. Gilbert’s first book launched her to guru status in the self-help genre, getting a nod from Oprah’s Book Club and inspiring a screenplay. The movie, starring Julia Roberts, is due to be released next year. Come back to NewsFIX in the new year for an exclusive on the day of release.

In Committed, Gilbert recounts the challenges of settling in America with her Brazilian-born Australian love, Felipe. Penguin, the book’s publisher, promises that Gilbert delivers insight into her new (un)matrimonial life with “wit, intelligence and compassion.” In the meantime, the preview makes a good stocking stuffer for any die-hard fans.

And for those trying to get their hands on Half the Sky by Sheryl Wudunn and Nicholas Kristoff, rumours say it’s mostly sold out across the country. Good luck!
