You don’t have to dig too deep into Toronto’s music scene to hear the name Dinosaur Bones.

Indeed, the indie rock rookies have made a name for themselves already, despite existing for little more than a year and a half and releasing one self-titled EP. They’ve already notched appearances at Edgefest, NXNE, and have been nominated by the XM Verge Music Awards for its Artist of the Year and Album of the Year prizes.

“It was unexpected, but reassuring that we’re on the right track and more people are paying attention to what we’re doing,” says guitarist and vocalist Ben Fox.

Judge for yourself whether or not they deserve the accolades, as they’ll hit the Horseshoe Tavern on Nov. 26 with Malajube and Hollerado, to show off new songs from their upcoming, currently untitled full-length debut produced by Jon Drew (Tokyo Police Club, Fucked Up), slated for release in early spring. If all goes off without a hitch (the band is still looking for a distributor for the release) their fan base can expect more of the range from dark, twangy and atmospheric pop that’s brought them the critical buzz they currently enjoy.

“The band was only three months old when we recorded the EP, so this one is a lot more focused,” says Fox. “We have a lot more of an identity now and hopefully people will be able to hear that on the record. Jon was full of amazing ideas. He takes what you’re doing and pushes your extremes, whether it’s your vocal takes or guitar tones. He makes you take it one step further.”

The modest short-term success is a testament to how malaise can drive someone to ambitious projects. Fox had a wealth of songs under wraps while studying political science and English literature at Concordia University in Montreal, but no band to play them with. The Cabbagetown native packed up, moved home to Toronto and tapped his network of east-end musician pals. Now with a band assembled and some momentum behind them, Dinosaur Bones is looking to capitalize.

“As soon as this record’s in the bag, we’re going to be hitting it pretty hard,” says Fox, “We’re going to be around.”
