Parliament St., Swagger Sunday, Toronto lesbian partyCee-erra Tyykos and Mel Fernandes’ Swagger Sunday is a different type of event on Toronto’s gay scene.
Specifically targeting queer people of colour in Toronto, the events aren’t just a rowdy good time, they also contribute to charity.
“I wanted to create a party with a purpose,” Robinson said. “Having a good time doesn’t have to be apathetic.”
Swagger Sunday takes place at Samovar, a vodka bar tucked away on Parliament St., a street known for its lesbian party scene thanks to legendary venues such as Pope Joan and Foxes and Coyotes.
This past Sunday’s event featured Canada’s premier vogue troupe, House of Monroe, who warmed up the crowd with a dance-off, along with lessons on how to strike a pose.
Poetic vocalist Ayo Leilani sang a couple of numbers but it was a high-voltage performance by hip hop/alt pop artist Wolf J who really frenzied up the crowd.
Meanwhile, hip hop/r&b DJsKalmplex and Unruly Twins kept the party going, spinning throughout the night.
Proceeds from the raffle at this second installment of Swagger Sunday were in support of Black CAP (Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention).
Swagger Sunday takes place on the third Sunday of each month.
