A Toronto man jailed following a child exploitation investigation made a brief court appearance at Old City Hall Thursday.
Toronto police charged Derek Campbell with a number of child pornography offences related to alleged abuse of a 13-year-old girl he met online.
Campbell is said by police to have made the girl pose sexually for photos and videos on several occasions. Police also allege he forced her to commit sex acts with animals. He made initial contact with the girl back in September 2007, according to police.
Campbell was arrested last Monday at his home after the victim told a police school resource officer stationed in her school about the abuse. Police say that their subsequent investigation uncovered a sufficient amount of evidence to hold the 28-year-old.
Detective Paul Krawcyzk believes that Campbell may have victimized others.
“The fact that they met on a website and because of the age difference could mean he?s done it before,” Krawcyzk said.
Krawcyzk said that investigators are still going through digital evidence, but believe at this time that Campbell acted alone.
Campbell is charged with possessing child pornography, producing child pornography, sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and bestiality.
His next court date is Thursday June 4. He remains in custody.
Krawcyzk urges anyone who has had contact with Campbell to contact Toronto Police Services at 416-808-7467, Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS, or to text TOR and their information to CRIMES (274637)
